Am 1. Februar 2004 sind bei Terroranschlägen auf die Büros der beiden führenden Parteien des Kurdistan-Irak Demokratische Partei Kurdistans (KDP) und Patriotische Union Kurdistans (PUK) in der kurdischen Hauptstadt Erbil über Hunderte von Menschen getötet und ca. 230 verletzt worden. Diese Anschläge gegen die Menschen, die an Opferfestfeiern der Parteien teilgenommen haben, steht in langer Tradition der Verfolgung, Vertreibung, und Vernichtung der Kurden im Irak.

Die Täter sind zweifellos Gegner eines demokratischen Föderalismus sowohl in Kurdistan-Irak als auch im gesamten Irak. Sie sind unter islamischen Extremisten bzw. arabischen Chauvinistischen zu suchen.

Erstmals in der Geschichte des Irak haben die Kurden in den vergangenen zwölf Jahren unter den schwierigsten Bedingungen in der Flugverbotszone im Nordirak zivile demokratische Verwaltungsstrukturen aufgebaut und freie Parlamentswahlen durchgeführt. Es gibt eine freie Presse -und Medienvielfalt. Kurdistan-Irak galt bis jetzt als eine relativ sichere Region. Das Ziel dieser terroristischen Anschläge ist u.a. die Destabilisierung der Region Kurdistan-Irak. Seit ein paar Monaten führen islamische Extremisten eine Kampagne gegen die Kurden in Kurdistan-Irak und bezeichnen sie als „Agenten der Imperialisten und Zionisten“ sowie als „Ungläubige“.

Nach Angaben der Regionalregierung in Kurdistan-Irak (Erbil) befanden sich unter den Toten der stellvertretende Ministerpräsident Sami Abdulrahman und der Koordinationsminister Shawkat Shekh Yezdin sowie weitere hochrangige KDP und PUK Politiker.

Wir dokumentieren die Erklärung der Regionalregierung Kurdistan-Irak vom 1. Februar 2004:

"Two simultaneous suicide attacks took place earlier today as hundreds of people were gathered to celebrate the Islamic holiday, Eid al-Adha, as two unidentified men entered the crowd and blew themselves up. The bloody attacks took place in the two main political offices in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan and left at least 100 people dead and scores of others injured.
Among the dead are top political representatives from both KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) and PUK (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) administrations and other party officials as follows:
· Sami Abdulrahman, Deputy Prime Minister KRG, Political Bureau Secretary, KDP
· Shawkat Shekh Yezdin, Coordination Minister, KRG, Central Committee Member, KDP
· Sa'd Abdulla, Political Bureau Member, Head of Branch 2, KDP
· Mehmmod Halo, Deputy Finance Minister, KDP
· Akram Mentik, Governor of Erbil, KDP
· Mehdi Khoshnaw, Deputy Governor of Erbil, KDP
· Ahmad Rojbeyani, Head of Administration of the City of Erbil, KDP
· Neriman Abdul-Hamid, Head of Police in Erbil
· Shakhewan Abbas, Leadership Member, PUK
· Khasro Shera, Leadership Member, PUK
These attacks have in a brutal way shaken the entire Kurdish society. KRG strongly condemns these horrific acts, which are one of the deadliest attacks in Iraq since the Coalition Forces gained control in May last year. Today's attacks are also evidence of a new terrorist strategy targeted at a specific group in Iraq, its political administration and its democratic achievements. These attacks are not only an attempt to undermine the Kurdish political administration, but are also a strike against the positive democratic developments that have taken place in Iraqi Kurdistan. It is also clear that these acts of terrorism were aimed at jeopardizing all future prospects regarding a formalised federal Kurdish administration. The Kurdistan Regional Government is determined to continue its path towards a democratic and federal solution for Iraq and will under no circumstances be set back by these acts of violence. The international community's recognition and support of the Kurdish claim for continued territorial self-rule is vital in the struggle towards a peaceful and democratic Iraq. The Kurdistan Regional Government urges the international community to openly condemn today's terrorist attacks."
